2017 MBUNDA TRADITIONAL CEREMONIES

The Mbunda Royal Establishment (MRE) in Zambia would like to inform the general public about the dates of forthcoming Mbunda Traditional ceremonies in 2017.

CHEKE CEREMONY – THE CEREMONY OF LIGHT

The Cheke Ceremony shall be held on two days this year: Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October 2017 at Mushuwa Palace in Limulunga, Western Province. The enormous popularity of the Cheke Ceremony among the people of Western Province and tourists from afar has necessitated the ceremony to take place over 2 days to afford many people chance to enjoy the spectacle since the traditional single day has proved to be inadequate.

The Breathtaking and spectacular Mbunda Matotola Parade shall take place on Thursday 28 September 2017 and like last year, the parade shall start from the Katongo area of Mongu, proceed through Mongu town and end up at the Cheke Arena at Mushuwa Palace. Last year this parade brought Mongu and Limulunga to a complete standstill with the public mesmerized by the Mbunda matotola.

For the first time, the Mwene shall perform the Kulithambetha dance of conquest accompanied by his Bakamanda (the Mbunda Warriors) on Saturday. There shall also be for the first time the Kukumbuka (eulogizing) performance by one talented Mbunda elder to further spice the event.

The matotolas shall be plentiful and other traditional dances by groups of men and women shall also be on show.

All the Mbunda chiefs in Zambia shall be in attendance together with some chiefs from other tribes too.

You are all invited to come and enjoy the ceremony of the light which guided the Mbundas to trek from Sudan to present day Zambia and Namibia.

Come and enjoy this rich Mbunda traditional ceremony and experience the rich and diverse Zambian culture.

THE LUKWAKWA CEREMONY – THE CEREMONY OF CONQUEST

The Lukwakwa Ceremony of the Mbunda people of North-Western Province shall be held on Saturday 7 October 2017 at the Manyinga Palace of Senior Chief Sikufele in Kabompo.

The Mbunda Conquest display by the Senior Chief and the Mbunda Matototola dances among others are the highlights of this spectacular traditional ceremony.

You are all cordially invited to come and enjoy this rich Mbunda traditional ceremony and experience the rich and diverse Zambian culture.
